Substantial Web Outage Hits Dozens Websites and Mobile Apps

A widespread online outage has impacted numerous sites and applications globally, as users reporting troubles accessing the internet following issues at Amazon’s cloud computing platform.

The disrupted platforms comprise the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with several Amazon-owned operations including its main retail website and the Ring home security firm.

In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was disrupted as well as its branches the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, while there were additional accounts of issues using the the tax authority online portal on Monday morning. Also in the UK, many Ring customers turned to online platforms to complain their security devices were not working.

Solely in the United Kingdom, reports of issues on specific platforms totaled the tens of thousands for each platform.

Amazon reported that the outage originated in the Atlantic coast of the United States at Amazon Web Services, a section that offers crucial internet infrastructure for a host of businesses, who utilize capacity on the company's servers. Soon after late night (PDT) in the America (8 in the morning BST), the company announced “elevated failure rates and slowdowns” for AWS services in a area on the east coast of the America. The widespread consequence appeared to affect apps around the world, and the outage tracking website reporting issues with the corresponding services in different parts of the world.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a platform that monitors online failures, further indicated a rise in outages on the start of the week, including several cases situated in Virginia, the location of the eastern US data center where AWS said the issues originated.
