Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a major honors show approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
